Advanced Phonics & Word Attack Fluency Vocabulary Comprehension |
What is it?
The basic idea in phonics is that letters represent sounds. Advanced phonics also includes rules for decoding words with multiple syllables like: prefixes & suffixes, letter combinations (e.g., ay, ow, ir, igh, augh). A big difference between strong readers and those who struggle is the ability to use letter-sound correspondences to decode words. Strong phonics skills help with accurate and fluent reading and spelling.
The ability to read text quickly, accurately, and with expression. Fluent readers can and do read more, increasing their vocabulary, general knowledge, comprehension, and motivation.
The knowledge of words (and word parts) and what they mean.
The ability to construct meaning and learn from text using a variety of applied strategies (e.g., make & verify predictions, retell, sequence story events, summarize, tell the main idea, identify similarities and differences).
